Black-Tailed Deer of Kodiak, Alaska

Sitka black-tailed deer, native to Southeast Alaska, were first introduced to Kodiak Island in the 1920s. Since then, they’ve thrived in the rugged, predator-sparse terrain, becoming one of the island’s most iconic game animals.

Smaller than many deer species in the Lower 48, Sitka black-tails are often considered the most beautiful — and by many hunters, the most delicious — of all deer.

A man in outdoor clothing kneels in tall, golden grass, holding a rifle, with a rifle shoulder strap and gloves. In front of him, a dead deer with a white patch on its chest lies in the grass. The background features rolling hills and mountains under a partly cloudy sky.
